on self-addressed envelopes
it is stupidity in its nakedness. period.
if this doesn't count as yet another idiosyncratic inefficiency of the administration, i dunno what does.
its purpose doesnt even justify it. ok my guess is that self-addressed envelopes came into place because the admin doesnt trust us to tell our parents our results. fine, but surely there are other ways to tell them about it.
(1) Calling them up. parents are mortally fearful of teachers calling them. trust me, parents will sit up and listen.
(2) Calling for a meet-the-teacher session. well, what is better than face-to-face interaction? it stimulates all the five senses of the parents and the horrors of the results will strike fear in the parents hearts in full force.
(3) Sending a school-issued letter. "Dear Sir/Madam, We regret to inform you of your child's performance at the recent blocks. If your child repeats this feat, we will expel him/her with no second thoughts in order to preserve the integrity of this world-class institution. Yours Sincerely, AWH." short, sweet, and concise. how much does an envelope, a stamp, some paper and ink cost? i'm (my parents are) paying misc fees for a reason.
the issue isnt even about the money. i can give ms ng two self-addressed envelopes without my family having to survive on cabbage soup and plain porridge for the rest of the month. then why am i complaining?
i don't see the need to follow blindly every single thing the authorities tell me to without complaints, esp counterintuitive things like this. and it'll be criticisms like these that whip the admin into shape. grouchy critics are always the catalysts of reform. like the special taskforce for canteen reform. gawd, they're finally doing something about the canteen.
